Position

Position is critical. You probably want to play very few hands up front due to the large amount of jamming that occurs.

If first to act, you will be forced to fold in many good situations.

Even though you have check-and-raise available, you will not be able to use it, because in many cases when the action gets back to you, the pot will have been raised and reraised already.

Being last to act is a big advantage.

Consequently, very few hands, other than the absolute premium ones, should be played in early position.

If the game is tight, which is usually the case in only some of the high-states games, you will want to play few hands up front and to steal a lot of pots in the back.

If the game is very loose, stealing becomes unimportant, as you virtually never have the opportunity to try it.

When you attempt to steal from a late position before the flop, you usually get action.

But you still want to play a lot of weaker hands from this spot.

You should bring them in with a raise, because many players – even when they are in late position –won’t play without ace-deuce, ace-trey, or some other big hand.

So your raise will tend to run these players out, and you often will end up playing against the blinds, who will take a flop with a weak hand to see what is out there.

Thus, you not only will have position on the blinds, but also will frequently have the better hand.

Notice that this is a very good situation when playing short-handed, especially if you are heads up.
